Event Details

As part of the America’s 250th Reading Challenge Project we will be discussing David McCullough's "1776".

David McCullough was a prominent historian and author. He was a two-time recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in the category “Best Biography or Autobiography” for Truman and John Adams. Both books were made into popular television film and miniseries on HBO. The John Adams miniseries starring Paul Giamatti received 13 Emmy Awards.

David McCullough’s 1776 was published in 2005, and the book sold over 1.25 million copies. The beginning of the book focuses on King George III addressing Parliament on October 26, 1775, and his determination to suppress the rebellion that is developing in America. The book focuses on such American Revolutionary figures as Nathanael Greene, George Washington and Henry Knox, and British generals as William Howe and Henry Clinton. The book goes into detail the stage of battles the British Army fought against the Continental Army from the Battle of Dorchester Heights, Battle of Long Island, and Battle of Trenton. The book goes into brief detail on activities of the Second Continental Congress and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Check the book out from the library, read it at your leisure, and join us for a lively discussion of this interesting story of American history.  Refreshments will be provided.

Registration recommended but not mandatory.  Suitable for teens, adults and seniors.
