Solar Eclipse 2017

Archived front page posts

UPDATE: We are out of eclipse glasses at both branches. We have some reserved for our programs from 1-3pm today which will need to be used on-site. We also will be supplying some pinhole viewers at the events, or you can make your own with the instructions found here. Our Teen Librarian will be at Lakeside High School during the eclipse to serve as a resource for the students at the Junior High and High Schools.

We at Ashtabula County District Library have partnered with STAR_Net to bring safe eclipse viewing to our library patrons. Come to the Ashtabula or Geneva branches in the week before the eclipse (August 14-21) to pick up your glasses or join us at the Ashtabula and Geneva libraries the day of! We will be having an eclipse program at both branches from 1-3 to learn more about the relationship between the Earth, Moon, and Sun; make some cool crafts; and safely watch the eclipse.

Are they available to walk in and get them? Is there a limit? Looking for our elementary school building.

You will be able to come in and get one pair of glasses per person (each person must be present) starting a week before the event. We are generally unable to supply large amounts for schools, but if you contact the library we can point you towards places you can purchase glasses for a good price and resources to use in your classroom.

Are you viewing it there after school? Haven’t seen it mentioned on Facebook.

One of the librarians will be at Lakeside High School to view the eclipse with the kids and whatever parents show up, but we will also have a viewing at the library.

My husband was able to get one pair yesterday but I went to library to get a pair today and now not available. Too bad they wouldn’t allow him one for each of us yesterday.

Our apologies, but we needed to make sure everyone had a fair shot–by requiring the presence of an individual, this kept people from abusing the system. We encourage you to share the glasses or check out other safe viewing methods.
