The 2020-2021 School Year

At the Ashtabula County District Library we are aware that students are at the beginning of a school year like no other. The same circumstances that are making the 2020-2021 school year so unusual are affecting library operations as well. We want to be certain parents and students are informed about how the pandemic will affect use of the buildings and have provided information regrading each location’s plans below.

Geneva Public Library

In order to provide a safe and secure environment for all, the Geneva Library is focusing on purposeful use of our building space this fall, and will have very limited accommodation space for students just looking for a place to “hang out.” Rather than invite large groups of youth to come each day, GPL has planned for the following:

  • We will be offering two (2) different activities each Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday this fall.  These activities will include coding, computer games and design, fine arts exploration, and our popular Stir it Up easy cooking class. The programs will run from 2:30 pm – 4 pm.

Participants MUST pre-register for these programs and class size will be limited to nine (9) students per session. Registration can be made by calling us at (440) 466-4521.
  • We have computers and printers available for use.  Because of their popularity, we are asking students (or their guardians) to call to schedule use of these. Prior scheduling will assure your student has access, and also helps us maintain necessary health and safety measures. Scheduling of computer time can be made by calling us at (440) 466-4521.

As always, patrons of all ages are expected to exhibit socially acceptable levels of behavior akin to those used in any public coffee shop or bookstore. All persons inside the building will be required to adhere to applicable State, local, and Library-set health and safety regulations in effect. We have a limited tolerance for foul language and disruptive behavior, and zero tolerance for bullying, vandalism, and blatant disregard for staff and other patrons.  (Full details available in the Ashtabula County District Library’s Code of Conduct.)

Despite all efforts, we do occasionally need to excuse patrons for unacceptable behavior. In most cases, this expulsion is for the remainder of the day, although extreme situations may require a lengthier banishment or a visit from a parent or authority figure before reinstatement.  In all cases, excused patrons are given an opportunity to use a phone to make arrangements for transportation. During inclement weather, we also allow them to wait in a designated spot inside the library for a period of fifteen (15) minutes awaiting pickup.

Should you have any questions or concerns about our policies, our programs, our registration process—or anything–please feel free to contact the Library directly.
