FACTS about the
Ashtabula County District Library Levy
- Through its branches in Ashtabula and Geneva and the County Bookmobile,
Ashtabula County District Library serves more 200,000 patrons annually.
Every year, more area families, children, and seniors rely on our public
library system, and our important services are available at no charge.
- ACDL presently receives no local taxpayer support. Since the mid-1980's,
the state has provided 95% of our funding.
- The state has cut funding to ACDL by more than $2 million since 2001.
- Ashtabula County District Library is requesting approval of a 1.35-mill
operating levy, essentially to replace state funding that has been lost
since 2001.
- Due to state funding reductions, ACDL has been forced to make significant
cuts to programs and services to our communities. We have reduced our hours
of operation by a third, delayed needed computer upgrades and building
maintenance, eliminated many vital programs for children and teenagers, and
drastically reduced purchase of books and magazines.
- Without local support, ACDL’s future will depend entirely on decisions
of the state legislature.
- Protecting our public libraries is important, because they are a vital
community asset for thousands of children, families, and senior
citizens.
- Funds from the levy would be used to:
- restore important programming for children and teenagers
- expand programs that help residents prepare resumes and find jobs
- continue critical programming and services to the local schools
- purchase books and other library materials that residents need the
most
- restore hours of operation previously cut
- address necessary equipment and maintenance issues
- Without the funds generated from the November ballot issue, ACDL will be
forced close branches an additional day every week, make more cuts that
eliminate programs upon which families and residents rely, and discontinue
book and other material purchases.
- Only eligible voters in the Library's defined service area will vote on
the levy. To see a map of the
service area, click here.
- The owner of a home valued at $75,000 would pay about $2.95 a month in
taxes for the levy.
- Election Day is Tuesday, November 2nd, and early voting starts
September 28th.
